September was a busy month for my wife, Lauren, and I. But we still managed to have a fun time with ROMtember, an idea I had where Lauren chooses all the best rom-coms for us to watch. I wish we were able to watch more this month—maybe we’ll bring it back for ROMvember—but this was still great. Here’s the list with my brief thoughts on what we watched this month!
About Time (2013)
I’ve only really known Domhall Gleeson from Ex Machina (2014), so seeing him alongside the epitomic rom-com star, Rachel McAdams, was refreshing. This film was incredible. I mean, it’s got everything: time travel, humor, drama, stellar cinematography, and perhaps the most meaningful and deep story I’ve seen in a rom-com.
I laughed and shed a few tears throughout a movie that was so much more than just a “true love’s kiss” romance. What a phenomenal movie. Lauren’s got taste!
27 Dresses (2008)
James Marsden should’ve retired that haircut long before 2008, my goodness. Katherine Heigl did great in this; I liked their chemistry especially toward the end. Also, a rom-com about a wedding planner was perfect. It was genuinely funny but also those early 2000s random racially insensitive jokes need to stay in the past.
Nevertheless, the ending was a huge payoff. All 27 brides in a row wearing their crazy dresses? Perfection. Add some 2000s music with swelling guitars and drums over that and you don’t expect me to get chills? Grow up.
Lauren’s two-for-two!
Twilight (2008)
I know this isn’t a rom-com, but per Lauren: “it’s so bad that it’s funny to watch, so it should count.” Who am I to argue? It was side-splitting.
This is a running contender for the most cringeworthy movie of all time. What’s wild is, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were (and now surely are) so much better than this. The amount of lip-bites and heavy exhales from Bella throughout this movie needs to be counted and presented to the Academy as sure evidence that Twilight should be discarded forever.
Costume design and colorization were wild. Charlie for president. He was the most normal (but still not really normal) character; like a balm in Gilead after the exodus. This was the perfect movie to inaugurate Fall! Lauren can do no wrong, I’m afraid.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
Matthew McConaughey was in his element here. The charisma, the humor, the personality—everything was working. Kate Hudson’s performance in this might be one of my favorites in rom-coms, ever. Not to mention their chemistry was perfect.
I loved that I hated both of them and had no justification for their actions throughout the whole thing. The “we’re both trash people trying to advance in our careers but we’re togetherrrr” thing was great. This one walked so 27 Dresses could run with the “journalist using nefarious schemes to break a big story for one week” trope. Good times.
Wow, Lauren’s taste in cinema is unrivaled! How does she do it? As far as I’m concerned, she’s four-for-four and definitely going to run away with some more stellar picks whenever we do this again. Husbands, trust your wives’ taste in rom-coms and other movies. It’s a blast.
(Mrs. Lauren Bower if you’re reading this I love you and thanks for watching so many, I mean sooo many movies with me. Wow you’re the best.)
